The Clifton StrengthsFinder©
by Dries Lombaard
The Clifton StrengthsFinder© is a web-based assessment created by Gallup Inc. that measures a person’s natural sequence of “talent themes”. The assessment produces a report indicating either the top five or the complete 34 talent themes in sequence.
Developed from the premise of positive psychology, which is concerned with “what is right with you”, Clifton StrengthFinder© is unique in the world of personal assessments and development tools. The accuracy combined with a dynamic result-interpretation makes StrengthsFinder© one of the most popular tools for self- and organizational development.
It’s important to distinguish between StrengthsFinder© and other psychometric tests or personality assessments. StrengthsFinder© measures talent themes, which is most easily described as the thinking, feeling and behavioral patterns where the most dominant “energy” and “need” is experienced.
The factors that influence these talent themes are mostly formed during the first 12 to 14 years of life. Focusing on the “big four ideas of psychology”, StrengthsFinder© prioritizes the 34 talent themes into four basic domains of the executing, influencing, relational and thinking personality perspectives. The full 34 report also exposes the non-patterns; those talents at the bottom of the report where a person often experiences most resistance when called upon to finish tasks that have need of those talent themes. A thorough understanding of the impact of not only the dominant talent themes but also the non-patterns is important.
The Strengths-based approach to career planning, placement, team dynamic, performance measurement and organizational development is catching on like wildfire in South Africa. Companies, organizations and schools are increasingly opting for a positive approach towards employee engagement and awareness. When talent is celebrated and developed, complementing a well-planned skills development programme, enormous success is achieved. Leaders and teams are learning that effective teams flourish when both ability (skill) and sustainability (talent) is cultivated. It is crucial to discover and understand how to develop natural talents, turning them into strengths, achieving sustainable growth and performance. This is realized when the StrengthsFinder© results are advanced through skilled and experienced Strengths coaching.
Strengths Institute has been shaping and expanding what is possible through discovering and developing Strengths in South Africa since 2005. Many organizations as wide ranging as the Allan Gray Orbis development programme and multi-national organizations in South Africa, Africa, Middle East and the United Kingdom have benefited from the “Beyond Awareness” approach to Strengths development at Strengths Institute.
